600 Article 1. Dupin, Voyages dans La Grande Bretagne, Entrepris relativement aux Services Publics de la Guerre, de la Marine, et des Ponts et Chaussées, en 1816—17—18—19, et 1820. Deuxième Partie, Force Navale, 1-37. Author: John Barrow.

Running Title: Dupin—The Navy of England and France.

Notes: In attributing the article to Barrow, Shine cites JM III's Register and Smiles II 54, 54n. 

The following evidence and information is published here for the first time. Murray MS., Cash Book 1821-24: the same person was paid for articles 1, 3, and 10 in this Number. John Wilson Croker to JM, 22 Dec. 1821 (quoted in Smiles II 54): 'All that ridiculous importance given to Dupin, a wretched écrivasseur, and that affectation of naval statistics, I think very unsuitable.' BL MS. 34613 (ff.1-2), John Barrow to Macvey Napier, 5 Jan. 1822, will not say if he was author of the article, but supports its defence of Admiral Rodney's breaking of the enemy line. 'Why should you take for granted that I have been writing to descry Clark?' Clark's Naval Tactics is discussed on page 27. The article's author refers to #81 (specific reference), an article by Barrow. In his QR articles, it was Barrow's signature practice to refer to his own works.

Running Title: Russian Church Architecture.

Notes: In attributing the article to Whittington, Shine cites JM III's Register. Shine also quotes from Murray MS., WG to JM, 26 Aug. 1821: 'Mr. Whittington's (who is he?) is a clever and sprightfully paper, & I have written to thank him, & promise its insertion in our succeeding No.' Shine identifies Whittington by his last name only. 

The following evidence was first published in VPR  28. Murray MS., H. D. Whittington to JM, Brighton [1 Oct. 1821 postmark]: 'As you were kind enough to say that you would send me the sheet of the Quarterly containing my article on Russian Architecture ....' Whittington is the author as well of #679.

Notes: In attributing the article to Barrow, Shine cites JM III's Register. Shine also quotes from Murray MS., WG to JM, [28 Dec. 1821; notation on letter in JM II's hand: 'QR 51 ER 71']: '... I have seen that ['Foreign Slave Trade,' Edinburgh Review 36 (Oct. 1821): 34-52] on the Slave Trade. A more perfect contrast between the two Revws cannot be found than those two furnish & surely never was [our] triumph more complete ... as for Barrow! comparison is a jest. One is all & the other nothing ....'

Notes: In attributing the article to Blomfield, Shine cites JM III's Register and Blomfield I 82.

The following evidence is published here for the first time. Murray MS., Charles James Blomfield to JM, 27 Sept. 1821, asks to borrow a copy of Copleston's Predestination. Murray MS., Blomfield to JM, 6 Nov. 1821: 'I sent some time since, a parcel to Mr. Gifford, under cover to you, which I hope he received.' NLW MS. 21743C (17/4), WG to Edward Copleston, Friday, 4 Jan. 1822: 'I have just ... seen the writer of the Art. After the warmest expressions of his respect and esteem for your writings and conduct ... he cheerfully gave up his name—perhaps you already guess it to be Dr. Blomfield.' The authors of the two volumes under review are important contributors to the QR. That Copleston alone is named in the running title is minor additional evidence in favour of Blomfield's authorship.

Notes: In attributing the article to Senior, Shine cites JM III's Register; Smiles II 54, 54n; Gentleman's Magazine XXI 578; Seymour 242-43; Brightfield 343; Hillhouse 50; and Levy 83, 363. Shine also quotes from Iowa MS., JM to Croker, Thursday, 30 July [1818]: ' I have sent for the "Trials" and I will be glad if you are so obliging as to give us an article on the new Tales, will you venture your thoughts upon the genius and the Art of their author—by which he creates fiction out of reality without injury to historical facts—You may rely with certainty upon S's being the author of at least these and the former Tales and of Rob Roy—for his publisher as I told you taking for granted, that, as I published the former Tales, I must be in the secret, told me many conversations about them, with Scott—perhaps out of your ingenuity you can manage to pay him some gratifying compliment—A work which is the subject of universal admiration merits the expenditure of some talent in a review of it.' 

John Wilson Croker thought the article 'excellent' (Croker to JM, 22 Dec. 1821, quoted in Smiles II 54). Rob Roy was reviewed by Francis Jeffrey in ER #824, Feb. 1818; Ivanhoe by Jeffrey in ER #899, Jan. 1820; Kenilworth by T. N. Talfourd in New Monthly Magazine #27, Feb. 1821. Notes: In attributing the article to Taylor, Shine cites only Surtees xiv. [Quarterly Review Archive editor's note: Surtees xiv is a list of Taylor's articles drawn up by Taylor himself.]

The following information is published here for the first time. Murray MS., Book Loans Register: 'Malthus on Economy' was sent to 'Mr. Nassau' [i.e., Nassau Senior] on 20 Nov. 1820. 

The subject of this article was reviewed in New Monthly Magazine #22, Feb. 1821, by Francis Place.

The following evidence is published here for the first time. Murray MS., WG to JM, 26 Aug. 1821, speaking of matter for future Numbers, says that Cohen has sent a strange thing. Murray MS., Francis Cohen to JM, 21 Dec. 1821, says he has received the QR and is delighted with his own article. Cohen later took the name Palgrave.

By way of recovering myself, I have read again 3 or 4 beautiful pages of Mitchell.' Murray MS., WG to JM, [1821]: 'It was my design to give Mitchell whose paper has much beautiful writing in it.'
