CONTENTS, IDENTIFICATION OF CONTRIBUTORS, AND HISTORICAL NOTES

245 Article 1. The First and Second Reports of the Committee of the Fish Association for the Benefit of the Community, respecting the Measures to be adopted for the Supply of the Metropolis and its Neighbourhood; Bernard, An Account of a Supply of Fish for the Manufacturing Poor; with Observations; Schultes, A Dissertation on the Public Fisheries of Great Britain, explaining the Rise, Progress, and Art of the Dutch Fishery, &c. &c., 265-304. Author: John Barrow

Running Title: Tracts on the British Fisheries.

Notes: In attributing the article to Barrow, Shine cites JM III's Register and Gentleman's Magazine XXI 139.

The following evidence is published here for the first time. Murray MS., John Barrow to JM, 24 May 1813, proposes an article on this subject. Murray MS., WG to JM, [3? 5? July 1813 postmark]: 'I have heard nothing from Mr Barrow ....' Murray MS., Barrow to JM, 23 July 1813, sends his article on the national fishery. The article is referred to in #260, which is also by Barrow. It was Barrow's signature practice in his QR articles to refer to his own works. The article is one in a series by Barrow in which dry rot is discussed. The series includes #208, #245, #260, #280, #297, #320, #328, #514, #704, and #341WI. The article's author has access to Admiralty records (p.302). BL MS. 34611 (f.143), Barrow to Macvey Napier, 22 Dec. 1814, discusses submitting to Encyclopaedia Britannica an article on the British fishery (Macvey Napier was editor of the Supplement). All Barrow can promise is to 'new mould' his information 'and put it into a more popular shape.'

JM II's marked QR: 'Barrow'.

JM III's Register: attribution to Barrow, but without evidence.

246 Article 2. Ferriar, An Essay towards a Theory of Apparitions, 304-12. Author: William Stuart Rose

Running Title: Ferriar on Apparitions.

Notes: In attributing the article to Rose, Shine cites JM III's Register and notes its citation of JM II's marked QR and unspecified letters. Shine says to see also Smiles I 243, 243n and quotes from Murray MS., WG to JM, [July 1813 ]: 'I have also inclosed for the printer Mr Rose's article....'

The following evidence is published here for the first time. Shine misses useful evidence by not quoting the full sentence in Murray MS., WG to JM, [3? 5? July 1813 postmark]: 'I have also inclosed for the printer Mr Rose's article & that on Drummond [#248] ....' BL MS. 28099 (f.115), WG to George Ellis, 30 June 1813 [5 July 1813 postmark]: 'Rose has sent his m.s. He is really an acquisition; & fortunately seems to have leisure for us.' Smiles I 243, 243n (cited in Shine) quotes from JM to Walter Scott, 18 July 1813: 'In confidence I may tell you that your long silence led us to avail ourselves of your friend Mr. Rose's offer to review Ferriar, and his article is already printing.'

JM II's marked QR: 'W. S. Rose'.

JM III's Register: attribution to Rose, citing unspecified letters and JM II's marked QR.

247 Article 3. Correspondence of the late Gilbert Wakefield, B.A. with the Right Hon. Charles James Fox, in the Years 1796-1801, chiefly on Subjects of Classical Literature, 313-28. Author: John William Ward, Lord Dudley

Running Title: Correspondence of Mr. Wakefield and Mr. Fox.

Notes: In attributing the article to Lord Dudley, Shine cites JM III's Register; QR LVII 97; Allibone; and DNB. Shine says to see also Byron I 185.

The following evidence is published here for the first time. Murray MS., WG to JM, 30 Aug. 1813: is in communication with Edward Copleston who is mediating into the QR an article from Copleston's friend. Dudley's QR articles were invariably submitted in great secrecy via his friend Copleston.

JM II's marked QR: 'Hon D. Ward Ld Dudley' [sic].

JM III's Register: attribution to Ward, but without evidence.

248 Article 4. D'Oyly, Letters to Sir W. Drummond; [Drummond,] Letters to Rev. G. D'Oyly by Vindex; D'Oyly, Remarks on Sir William Drummond's Œedipus Judaicus, 329-46. Author: George D'Oyly, probably.

Running Title: D'Oyly's Letters to Sir W. Drummond.

Notes: In attributing the article to D'Oyly, Shine cites JM III's Register and notes that it cites JM II's marked QR and unspecified letters. Shine also cites QR CCX 741.

The following evidence is published here for the first time. Devon MS. 1149M (f.104), WG to Edward Copleston, 12 Feb. 1812, wishes that John Eveleigh (Provost of Oriel College, Oxford), or someone, would review Sir William Drummond's 'Religius Iudaicus.' [sic]  Heber I 394: Reginald Heber to John Thornton, May 1813, says he offered to review Drummond's Oedipus Judaicus, but D'Oyly has instead answered him in a pamphlet, which a third party has offered to review in QR

A review of Hamilton's Aegyptiaca in ER #573, Aug. 1811, by William Drummond and Henry Brougham, contains some of the ideas D'Oyly found objectionable in Drummond's writings.

JM II's marked QR: [in pencil] 'Doyley'. [sic]

JM III's Register: attribution to D'Oyly, citing unspecified letters and JM II's marked QR.

249 Article 5. Colman, Vagaries Vindicated; or, Hypocritic Hypercritics. A Poem Addressed to the Reviewers, 346-48. Author: John Wilson Croker

Running Title: Colman's Vagaries Vindicated.

Notes: In attributing the article to Croker, Shine cites JM III's Register; Smiles I, 262; Graham 41; Clark 68, 68n; and Brightfield 454. Shine also quotes from the following two letters. Murray MS., WG to JM, [3? or 5? July 1813 postmark]: 'Colman I see advertized. Would you have me try to get at Mr Croker once more?—If the book be worth reviewing, he is the only person to do it, & I will write to him.' Iowa MS., WG to John Wilson Croker, n.d.: 'The facetious Mr Coleman has written against us a poem with notes. Seeing that your criticisms excite so much attention—I wish you would extend them ....'

The following evidence and information is published here for the first time. Croker reviewed Colman at #214. Claimed by Croker in five of his Clements Library MS. lists (one instance is queried) and included in the Cambridge University Library bound volumes of Croker's articles.

JM II's marked QR: 'Croker'.

JM III's Register: attribution to Croker, but without evidence.

250 Article 6. &#917&#933&#929&#921&#928&#921&#916&#927&#933 '&#919&#929&#913&#922&#923&#917&#921&#916&#913&#921. Euripidus Heraclidae. Ex recensione Petri Elmsley, A. M., qui annotationes suas et aliorum selectas adjecit, 348-66. Author: Charles James Blomfield

Running Title: Elmsley's Eurpidis Heraclidae.

Notes: In attributing the article to Blomfield, Shine cites JM III's Register and notes that it cites JM II's marked QR and unspecified letters. Shine also cites CHEL XII 526.

The following evidence is published here for the first time. Murray MS., Peter Elmsley to JM, 1 Apr. 1813: 'Mr. Blomfield is now engaged in reviewing the [Elmsley's] edition [of Euripides' Heraclidae] for the Quarterly Review.'

JM II's marked QR: 'Blomfield' citing unspecified letters.

JM III's Register: attribution to Blomfield, and cites unspecified letters and JM II's marked QR.

251 Article 7. Author: Robert William Hay

Running Title: Montgalliard—sur la Puissance Russe, &c.

Notes: In querying its attribution to Robert William Hay, Shine cites JM III's Register and states, 'The article is certainly not by Heber: Heber I 373-74, 378, 384, 385.'

Some of the following evidence was first published in VPR 28; some is published here for the first time. Derby MS. D3155M / C5927, WG to Robert John Wilmot, 10 Dec. 1812, says he is willing to publish Wilmot's article on Leckie (referred to in this article passim) if Wilmot is willing to revise it. Murray MS., JM to WG, 25 Apr. 1813 [copy], says he has an article on the Cossacks by Heber [this letter is quoted by Shine under #237]. The following evidence, introduced in VPR 28 to support an attribution of #251 to George Miller, instead supports an attribution of #170WI to Miller. Southampton MS. WP1/941/13, George Miller to Arthur Wellesley, 14 July 1828, in recommending himself for a vacant bishopric in Ireland, Miller states he performed a service to government in his QR article on the relations of Turkey and Russia.

JM III's Register: queries its attribution to R. W. Hay and with the following note: 'see Gifford's letters to him.'

252 Article 8. Meadley, Memoirs of William Paley. Second Edition, with an Appendix, 388-400. Author: Thomas Dunham Whitaker.

Running Title: Meadley's Memoirs of William Paley.

Notes: In querying its attribution to Whitaker, Shine cites JM III's Register. Shine also quotes from the following letter. Murray MS., WG to JM, [20 May 1813; pencil notation on letter: '?Art in No. 181 on Paley by Dr Whitaker.']: 'I enclose a letter ... for Dr <W> .... I have desired the Dr to look at our former Art & at the new Edition of Paley's life and if he thinks that the additions justify a new art. I have told him that is just what we desire.'

The following evidence was first published in VPR 24. Murray MS., Thomas Dunham Whitaker to JM, 24 Apr. 1813, offers to review 'Paley.' On page 389, the article's author refers back to #39, which is attributed to George D'Oyly. Compare the characterization of a Cambridge University education as a 'forcing system' with a similar sentiment in #234 (p.30), which is also by Whitaker.

JM III's Register: queries its attribution to Whitaker and cites unspecified letters.

253 Article 9. Tracts on Mathematical and Philosophical Subjects; comprising, among numerous important Articles, the Theory of Bridges, with several Plans of recent Improvement. Also, the Result of numerous Experiments on the Force of Gunpowder, with Applications to the modern Practice of Artillery. By Charles Hutton, LL.D. and F.R.S. &c. late Professor of Mathematics in the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, 400-18. Author: Olinthus Gregory.

Running Title: Hutton's Mathematical and Philosophical Tracts.

Notes: In the absence of guidance from JM III's Register, Shine does not suggest an author for this article.

The following evidence was first published in VPR 24. Olinthus Gregory was mathematical master at Woolwich Academy from 1802. He succeeded the eminent Charles Hutton as professor of mathematics there, 1807-38. The article is an extended encomium. See p.418 where Gregory is mentioned as Hutton's collaborator. The article is referred to at pp.97-100 of #73, which is also by Gregory. See also #103 and #186 where Gregory's role in the QR is discussed.

The subject of this article was reviewed in ER #650, Oct. 1813, probably by John Playfair.

254 Article 10. M'Crie, The Life of John Knox, containing Illustrations of the History of the Reformation in Scotland, with Biographical Notices of the principal Reformers, and Sketches of the Progress of Literature in Scotland, during a great Part of the Sixteenth Century, 418-33. Author: Thomas Dunham Whitaker

Running Title: M'Crie's Life of John Knox.

Notes: In attributing the article to Whitaker, Shine cites JM III's Register and Nichols xxix.

The following evidence and information is published here for the first time. Murray MS., Thomas Dunham Whitaker to JM, 24 Apr. 1813, says he will review 'Knox.'

The subject of this article was reviewed in ER #598, July 1812, by Francis Jeffrey.

JM III's Register: attribution to Whitaker and with the following note: 'From a letter of Dr W's Ap 24, 1813.'

255 Article 11. Langsdorff, Voyages and Travels in Various Parts of the World during the Years 1803, 4, 5, 6, and 7, 433-43. Author: John Barrow

Running Title: Langsdorff's Voyage round the World.

Notes: In attributing the article to Barrow, Shine cites JM III's Register and Warter II 395.

The following evidence is published here for the first time. Murray MS., John Barrow to JM, 10 June 1812, states that he is working on this article. Murray MS., Cash Day Book, 1810-13, p. 42, dated Saturday 29 May 1813: 'Quarterly Review / Krusensterns Voyage Dr [i.e., debit] / 1 copy to Barrow / Langsdorfs Voyage to J. B. Esq.'  The article's author refers back to #170, which is also by Barrow, and pp.433-35 is a defence of it. The author of #299, Barrow, states on page 285 that the article continues from #255. It was Barrow's signature practice in his QR articles to refer to his own works. Articles #132 and #231, by different hands, are also referred to.

JM III's Register: attribution to Barrow and with the following note: 'J B's letter June 10, 1812.

256 Article 12. Villani, Istorie Fiorentine di Giovanni Villani, Cittadino Fiorentino. The Florentine Histories of Giovanni Villani, a Citizen of Florence, to the year 1348, 444-66. Author: James Herman Merivale, probably.

Running Title: Villani's Istorie Fiorentine.

Notes: In the absence of guidance from JM III's Register, Shine does not suggest an author for this article.

The following evidence was first published in VPR 24. The first sentence of this article refers back to #200, which is also probably by Merivale. Pg.360n of #200 mentions Giovanni Villani. On page 26n of #283, also on Italy, article #200 is referred to. That article's authorship is uncertain. Characteristically of Merivale, the author does not use Roman numerals in dignitaries' titles—Pope John the Twenty-second, Emperor Frederick the Second etc. (though he does write 'Boniface VIII,' which, if not simply an inconsistency, may be a printer's variant).

257 Article 13. Blackall, Observations on the Nature and Cure of Dropsies, 466-71. Author: Thomas Young

Running Title: Blackall on Dropsies.

Notes: In attributing the article to Young, Shine cites JM III's Register; Brande XXVIII 157; Gentleman's Magazine XXI 139; Young 228; and Pettigrew IV 21.

The following evidence is published here for the first time. The article appears in Young's definitive MS. list of his QR articles.

JM III's Register: attribution to Young, but without evidence.

258 Article 14. Malcolm, Sketch of the Sikhs: a singular Nation who inhabit the Provinces of the Penjab, between the Rivers Jumna and Indus, 472-79. Author: John Barrow

Running Title: Sir J. Malcolm's Sketch of the Sikhs.

Notes: In querying its attribution to Barrow, Shine cites only JM III's Register.

The following evidence was first published in VPR 27; some of the following information is published here for the first time. Devon MS. 1149M (no folio no.), WG to Edward Copleston, 14 Sept. 1811, 'an unpleasant accident has just called off one of my friends, who had engaged for a Review of Malcolm's India.' [The work alluded to, Malcolm's 'Sketch,' first published in Asiatic Researches, is mentioned in article #258.] Murray MS., John Barrow to JM, 5 May 1813: he expresses an interest in reviewing Malcolm's book on the Sikhs. Punjab is spelled in the article's head note as above.

The subject of this article was reviewed in ER #598, July 1812, by James Mill.

JM III's Register: queries its attribution to Barrow, and with the following note: 'From an allusion in his letters May 4 & 5 1813'.

259 Article 15. [Scott,] The Bridal of Triermain, or, the Vale of St. John, 480-97. Author: George Ellis

Running Title: The Bridal of Triermain.

Notes: In attributing the article to Ellis, Shine cites JM III's Register and Smiles I 126 [that asserts but does not demonstrate Ellis's authorship]; Lockhart III 253; and QR CCX 747. Shine says to see also Grierson III 292.

The following evidence is published here for the first time. BL MS. 31022 (f.16), WG to William Stuart Rose, 27 Feb. 1813: 'I had hoped that by this I might have announced to you the appearance of our Review; but our friend G. Ellis, contrary to his usual practice, has delayed us by his review of Scott.'

For a useful note on Scott's The Bridal of Triermain, including comment on its critical reception in the Quarterly Review and other contemporary journals, see the Walter Scott Digital Archive, an excellent online resource from the Division of Special Collections, Edinburgh University Library.

JM III's Register: attribution to Ellis, but without evidence.
