Index to the Contents of Shelley's Notebooks

Index to the Contents of Shelley's Notebooks and
Other Literary MSS. Mainly in the Bodleian Library

Compiled by Tatsuo Tokoo
Mark-up by Melissa Sites

This index covers the following MSS.: (1) Bodleian MSS. Shelley d. 1 through d. 3 and e. 1 through e. 5 (hereafter referred to as d. 1, d. 2*, etc.); Bodleian MSS. Shelley adds. c. 4, c. 5, d. 3, e. 3, e. 6 through e. 20, and f. 1 (hereafter referred to as adds. c. 4, adds. e. 6*, etc.); Bodleian MS. Montagu d. 18; (2) the Huntington Library MSS. published as Notebooks of P. B. Shelley, ed. H. B. Forman, 1911, vols. i-iii (hereafter referred to as B-H I[II, III] followed by folio numbers and corresponding page numbers of the published work); (3) the C. H. Pforzheimer Library MSS., of which the transcripts are published in Shelley and his Circle, ed. K. N. Cameron and D. H. Reiman, 1961- , vols. i-vi (hereafter referred to by their MS. numbers, SC 124, SC 339, etc.); (4) the British Library MSS.; (5) the Pierpont Morgan Library MSS. and a few others. These MSS. are all rough drafts, unless otherwise stated.

The titles are based on The Complete Poetical Works of P. B. Shelley, ed. T. Hutchinson (1905) for poetical works and on The Complete Works of P. B. Shelley, ed. R. Ingpen and W. Peck (1926-30), Julian edition, for prose works (and for some few of the poetical works not included in Hutchinson's edition), since these are still considered to be the standard edition of Shelley's poetry and prose, respectively. I have also followed these editions in the arrangement of the works published in them.

Of the above MSS. the following items are Shelley's working notebooks: Bodleian MSS. Shelley d. 1, d. 3, and e. 1 through e. 4; Bodleian MSS. Shelley adds. e. 6 through e. 12 and e. 14 through e. 20; the Huntington Library MSS.; and the Pforzheimer MS. SC 546.

I exclude from this index the contents of the three fair copy books, two in the Harvard College Library** and one in the C. H. Pforzheimer Library (the 'Esdaile Notebook') ***.

I hope this index will be improved through the additions and corrections by those who use it.

NOTE: This is a revised version of my article originally published in Humanities: Bulletin of the Faculty of Letters, Kyoto Prefectural University [ISSN 0075-7381], No. 34 (November 1982), pp. 1-28. Dr. Bruce Barker-Benfield of the Bodleian Library suggested two additions, one for 'An Ode written October, 1819' and the other for 'The Coliseum.' Professor Irving Massey of the State University of New York at Buffalo identified the lines in Italian on page 364 of Bodleian MS. Shelley adds. e. 9 as Dante's Purgatorio, xx, 46ff. [Tatsuo Tokoo, 21 Nov. 1996]

* I must call the attention of users of this index to the fact that the complete shelf-mark ought always to be stated in full when they cite from the Bodleian Shelley MSS. -- e.g. "Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS. Shelley d. 1" or "Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS. Shelley adds. e. 6."

** A facsimile of the one has been published as The Shelley Notebook in the Harvard College Library, reproduced with notes and a postscript by George E. Woodberry (1929). As for the other, see W. Peck, Shelley: His Life and Work, 2 vols. (1927), I, 477 and R. M. Smith, The Shelley Legend (1945), pp. 43-44.

*** Published by K. N. Cameron as The Esdaile Notebook (1964) and by N. Rogers as The Esdaile Poems (1966). The transcript of the MS. is given in Shelley and his Circle, iv, 924-1062.
