Lord Castlereagh's Patriotism
The Morning Chronicle (October 1, 1805)

Napoleon's conquests I deplore,
    And hate his upstart race;
And why?—You know if he came o'er,
    I then might lose my place! [1]

1. Robert Stewart, Second Marquess of Londonderry, better known as Viscount Castlereagh (1769-1822) was appointed Secretary for War by Pitt in July 1805. His first act as Secretary for War was to dispatch an expeditionary force to Hanover, which was defeated by Napoleon at Austerlitz (December 1805).
