A Card to Subscribers
Anon
The Cambridge Intelligencer (July 19, 1794)

Ye who erst warm'd his Grace of York,[1]
With loyal waistcoats, made of flannel,
Haste, now send jackets, all of cork,
To waft him safe across the channel.

Notes

1. The Duke of York, an incompetent commander, was dispatched with a force of only four battalions to Holland in 1793. Even though he did not have enough men to wage a successful campaign, the government did not recall him until after the defeat of Belgium in 1794.
