Dating note: This unsigned note is in another hand, probably Henry Herbert Southey’s, and was written at a time when Robert Southey expected to arrive in London in late April 1820. He was delayed, and did not arrive in town until 1 May 1820, thus missing the annual dinner of the Royal Academy of Arts on 29 April. BACK

[1] The date, in 1820, of the Annual Dinner of the Royal Academy. The event had been inaugurated on 21 April 1771 by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723–1792; DNB), the Academy’s first president. Southey was, in the end, unable to attend as his arrival in London was delayed. BACK
