2368. Robert Southey to John Rickman, 22 January 1814 *

Keswick. 22 Jany. 1814

My dear R.

When this will reach you Heaven knows. The mail which was due yesterday has not arrived yet, – & to have the mails stopt was all that was wanting to compleat the dolorousness of our Icelandish winter.

I have lately received a good cargo of new books from Portugal, where the Academy [1]  have resumed their labours with good effect. Under an awkward title they have begun a collection of xxxxx voyages & travels &c relating to their own discoveries & colonies. [2]  Good part of these are mere translations from Ramusio: [3]  – but they have discovered the original of Duarte Barbosa [4]  which was thought to be lost, & brought to light some Brazilian papers: – & a great deal may be expected as the work proceeds. I will not fail to let the Capitaneus know if any thing which concerns him should turn up.
