Benjamin Bailey, best known for his friendship with Keats, was serving as senior colonial chaplain in Ceylon when Jewsbury arrived there. He published a volume of poems on Ceylon in 1841; many of the poems had first appeared in the Ceylon Magazine from September 1840 to February 1841. He served as the archdeacon of Colombo from 1852 until his death in 1853.
