Wordsworth visited Switzerland on a walking tour with his friend Robert Jones in 1790 and again in 1820, accompanied by his sister Dorothy and his wife Mary. The three-dimensional model he recalls was the work of Franz Ludwig Pfyffer von Wyher (1716–1802), a surveyor and former officer in the French army. Using the best measurement techniques then available, Pfyffer created this three-dimensional model of the region, now considered the world’s oldest large-scale landscape relief. It can still be visited at Lucerne’s Glacier Garden. Photo: Pfyffer’s model (courtesy of the Glacier Garden Museum, Lucerne, Switzerland, www.gletschergarten.ch).
